The Challenge of Choice

Technical, legal and commercial aspects of DVB
presented by the experts

Digital Video Broadcasting has progressed at a pace unequalled by any other broadcasting technology since the introduction of radio broadcasting in the 1920s. The digitalisation of our networks has opened the possibility for the introduction of enhanced services including increased channel choice, improved standard television quality, high definition television and mobile television. This proliferation of possibilities has presented us with a myriad of opportunities. Terrestrial Broadcasters, Satellite and Cable Operators are faced with the dilemma of how best to integrate the new emerging possibilities into their existing services. Choice is the order of the day.

The DVB Project since its inception in the early 1990s has spearheaded all these significant developments and has provided a continuing service of information to the industry. In recent years, the annual conference ‘DVB World’ organised by the International Academy of Broadcasting has proved to be a vital element in this process of information, bringing together year-by-year speakers directly involved in the ongoing work. Firmly established in the annual calendar of essential industry events, it is an occasion not to be missed.

DVB World 2006 promises to be just as exciting as previous conferences with the emphasis on the choice offered dealing with the DVB worldwide situation, mobile television, MHP, DRM, HDTV and the future use of the terrestrial spectrum.

About the DVB Project

The Digital Video Broadcasting Project (DVB*) is an industry-led consortium of over 260 broadcasters, manufacturers, network operators, software developers, regulatory bodies and others in over 35 countries committed to designing global standards for the delivery of digital television and data services. The DVB standards cover all aspects of digital television from transmission through interfacing, conditional access and interactivity for digital video, audio and data. The consortium came together in 1993 to create unity in the march towards global standardisation, interoperability and future proofing.

To date, there are numerous broadcast services using DVB standards. There are hundreds of manufacturers offering DVB compliant equipment, which is in use around the world. DVB dominates the digital broadcasting world. A host of other services is also on-air with DVB-T, DVB-S and DVB-C including data on the move and high-bandwidth Internet over the air. Further information about DVB can be found at: www.dvb.org.
